How to make a foaming sugar scrub

I love finding quick and easy DIY skincare recipes! Here’s one that I make every year for family and friends. This makes a nice little stocking stuffer, or teacher gift, that is cost effective and different from baked goods or the yearly gift card. You can pair it with some bath salts, a loofah and tie it up in a cellophane bag with a ribbon and a gift card.

Gather the following:

  • Foaming Bath Butter -you can make your own-here’s the link for the formulation I purchased on Etsy. I have linked her main page as she has a lot of different recipes that you can purchase there. I purchased the “DIY – From Scratch – Foaming Bath Butter Base” She has instructions on her download on how to make the foaming bath butter base as well as how to make a sugar scrub. This is my preferred foaming bath butter, as the commercial ones are often out of stock, and it’s one more item that I can create at home.
  • Two commercial made bath butters to consider: Stephenson’s Crystal OPC (Foaming Bath Butter) (I have used this product, however I cannot find it for sale in Canada at the writing of this post) and Crafters Choice Foaming Bath Whip (I have not tried this product, however there are a lot of reviews that seem to prefer this brand over the Stephenson’s one.)
  • White sugar
  • Essential oils or fragrance oils (be sure that your fragrance oils are free of synthetic ingredients).
  • Jars (I prefer to use a plastic PET jar for anything that goes in the bathtub for safety reasons).
  • Stand or hand mixer

How to:

You will want to mix the contents of your container of the foaming bath butter with a stand or hand mixer. It can be quite solid, but whipping it will make it light and fluffy and it will increase in volume.

You can simply use as a whipped soap by adding essential oils (3%) and mica. Whip in to fully incorporate.

To make a sugar scrub, you will begin by mixing the contents of the foaming bath butter with a mixer, until the desired texture is achieved. Depending on the brand you choose, they will have specific instructions as to amounts of sugar and essential oil or fragrance. The website that you purchase from should have the details of how to use any additional ingredients. Here are some basic instructions to follow, printable available below.

  1. Thoroughly mix contents of bucket before removing desired amount for recipe.
  2. Weigh out the desired amount in a mixing bowl large enough to add the amount of sugar. Use 100% bath butter to 100% sugar as some of the sugar will dissolve.
  3. Add 3% fragrance and water based color or mica as desired. (Consider something that is an uplifting scent in the bath or shower.)
  4. Whip with hand mixer for 5-10 minutes.
  5. Put your finished product into plastic jars (PET).

I have found that the Stephenson product works well at 50% foaming bath butter and 50% sugar. Crafter’s Choice indicates to use 100% sugar. The blend will change once you have added the sugar, essential oils and mica. I always find that when using a new product to do some testing with smaller amounts to have an idea of how stiff or loose the end product will be.

Don’t stress about getting this perfect, I have emptied out jars of product and added more sugar if the end product isn’t to my liking. It should be scoopable with out being runny.
