Making your own dishwasher rinse aid at home is really simple. You only need a few ingredients to make this diy rinse aid over and over again. I have been using it for several years, and it has shown to be really effective, especially since I moved out to the country with well water and a water softener. I also use a natural dishwasher detergent, that I buy at my local grocery store, but since moving to the country I’m tempted to try some diy dishwasher detergent too! I’ll keep you posted!
This recipe does contain affiliate links for certain products. I have never tried to make it without Thieves Household Cleaner (item #374303 for the 426 ml $30.50 Canadian) as this product is so inexpensive to use on a regular basis, I just don’t see the point in not using it. You may use a natural liquid dish soap in lieu of the Thieves Liquid Dish Soap. I have many times and it has worked well. I have offered alternatives for some of the ingredients, and of course if you prefer not to use essential oils, that is totally up to you. You may also skip the Thieves household cleaner, I am not sure how it would work, but it would probably still be pretty good. Rinse aids need a surfactant to help spread the product which is why there are these two ingredients that help to accomplish this.
The original recipe calls for 1 cup of distilled white vinegar, however I find that doing a 50/50 split with cleaning vinegar works best for me.
Lemon oil is a really great cleaning essential oil, so I wouldn’t skip it, and you may use a different brand if you wish, I am using what I have on hand!
